Man Utd News LIVE: Rangnick ‘deal Reached’, Pochettino Manager BOOST, Haaland ‘should Snub Utd’ LATEST

RALF RANGNICK has been confirmed as the new Manchester United manager until the end of the season.

The former Lokomotiv Moscow sporting director is also interested in RB Leipzig's £33m midfielder Amadou Haidara.

Rangnick could yet earn the permanent role with the Red Devils reportedly considering adding an optional extension clause in his contract.

But surprisingly, Roberto Mancini is being linked with the permanent United post, despite previously managing City.

Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo has hit out at a story from France Football Editor-in-Chief Pascal Ferre, which said he wouldn't retire until he had won more Ballon d'Or's than Lionel Messi.

However, Ronaldo did tell Piers Morgan that that was exactly his ambition in an interview in 2019.

    LEAKED SNAPS

Pictures of Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford this afternoon have been leaked on social media.

He's expected to be in the building for tomorrow's clash against Arsenal, but will not be in the dugout as a work permit has not been granted in time.

    MORE FROM MICHAEL

This is what Michael had to say when asked about his own managing philosophy, and whether he was willing to learn from Ralf Rangnick.

He said: "I think you always have your own ideas, whether it be a player, certainly players have got their own ideas, as a coach, a manager or whatever it may be.

"As an individual, there's certain things you prefer or certain things that come natural to you. I'm always prepared to learn, I've obviously learned an awful lot over the last week.

"I've learnt on the job, if you like, but as a back-up I've seen what goes on close hand over recent years.

"So, it was a bit of a step but maybe not as much as people think."

    COMBINED XI

It's been several years since a match between United and Arsenal played a significant role in the destination of the Premier League title.

But SunSport thought it'd only be right to take a stroll down memory lane and devise a starting XI featuring some clubs' best players ahead of tomorrow's meeting.

Who would you have in your best XI's?

    MADNESS FOR MICHAEL

Michael Carrick was quizzed by reporters on a whirlwind last 10 days in his press conference ahead of tomorrow's clash against Arsenal.

He said: "I think obviously a lot has happened in the last week or 10 days and I've had to certainly adapt and take on a new challenge and some skillsets maybe out of my comfort zone that I've never had to tackle before.

"I've enjoyed seeing how I've coped with that at times. You don't know until you're in that situation and you have to learn on the job.

    OWEN'S ANALYSIS

Former Premier League striker Michael Owen is backing the Red Devils to come out on top against Arsenal tomorrow evening.

The ex-Liverpool man believes Mikel Arteta's side are still 'behind' the Red Devils.

Owen told BetVictor: "Manchester United v Arsenal is a fixture that always grabs newspaper headlines, and with the introduction of Ralf Rangnick, this is sure to be no different.

"It’s still hard to grasp what Manchester United are in terms of style of play, but I do believe the German will have them far more organised, especially at set plays.

"For Arsenal, there’s definitely been improvement here, although to be honest, I do think they’re slightly behind Manchester United when you look at the sides pound-for-pound.

"With that in mind, I’m going for a home win for the Red Devils."

    INJURY UPDATE

Michael Carrick remained tight-lipped when asked by reporters on any injury news ahead of tomorrow's clash.

All that the stand-in boss confirmed was that skipper Harry Maguire would return to the squad after suspension.

When asked for an update, he said: “Nothing really new.

“There are always niggles at this time of year, playing a lot of games. There are always players you’re waiting on a little bit, to an extent.

“Obviously, Harry is coming back into the squad after his suspension but we’ll see who is fit and available for tomorrow [Thursday].”

"They got on really well. The game went well. Not a problem at all."

    CARRICK BACKS FRED

Michael Carrick has been speaking to the media ahead of tomorrow's home clash against Arsenal.

And the stand-in United boss has stood by the much maligned midfielder Fred.

Carrick said: "[It] gets overlooked he is first choice for a good Brazil team.

One of the biggest things people don’t see is the desire to be a team player.

    ERL OF MANCHESTER

Ralf Rangnick will 'try to convince' Erling Haaland to sign for Manchester United.

According to Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk, Rangnick will try to use his existing relationship with the star striker to lure him to Old Trafford.

Rangnick signed Haaland for RB Leipzig while he was director of football at the Austrian club.

And the 63-year-old could try and repeat the feat once again, although this time round he will have to trigger Haaland's £64million release clause at Borussia Dortmund.

The interim United boss is said to be close to Erling's father Alf-Inge, who also acts as his agent alongside Mino Raiola.

    BREAKING

Young Boys have been given special permission to travel and play Manchester United without quarantining.

The Champions League clash faced being moved from Old Trafford because of the Omicron strain.

Restrictions have been placed on arrivals into Switzerland from Britain as a result of the new variant, which means Young Boys feared needing to quarantine when re-entering the country.

But now the Swiss side have confirmed they been given an exemption which will allow them to play in Manchester without quarantining afterwards.

They posted on Twitter: "YB has received a special permit from the Canton of Bern for the away games in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Youth League.

"This means that players and staff do not have to be in ten-day quarantine after their return journey."

    HAMMER TIME

The prospect of West Ham making a January move for Jesse Lingard has increased after David Moyes admitted he needs to strengthen his attacking options.

Said Benrahma will miss most of January on Africa Cup of Nations duty to up the pressure on the London club’s limited options going forward.

And Moyes has said: “Maybe we can add to the front line in some way possible which might give us other alternatives as well.

“Said can play a couple of roles, he plays as a ten or off the left and we can decide on the day how we use him.

“So of course we'd like to strengthen and of course, we want you to keep improving and challenge the teams at the top.”

    IN THE BUILDING

    Ralf Rangnick is reportedly

INSIDE Old Trafford and getting accustomed to the stadium.

That's according to the Telegraph's Mike McGrath.

Remember Rangnick hasn't secured a work permit in time to be in the dugout for tomorrow's clash against Old Trafford, but he could be watching from the stands.

    LEIPZIG RAID

RB Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku is the latest name to be linked with Manchester United.

Ralf Rangnick could raid his former club in order to bring some familiar faces to Old Trafford.

According to German outlet SportBild, the 24-year-old is Rangnick's latest target.

Nkunku has been in stellar form this campaign, scoring 13 goals in all competitions so far.

That includes a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.

He's already proven he can do it against United's fiercest rivals, and he may get the chance to do it again in a Red Devils shirt.

    IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

In case you missed it, Manchester United nearly sealed a deal for Jack Grealish, 12 months before his historic £100million transfer to Manchester City.

Grealish told the Telegraph: "I was really close to going [to Manchester United], but nothing happened in the end.

"We played United in a pre-season game on Saturday and I wasn’t supposed to play in a cup game at Burton.

"But after the United game I said to [Christian] Purslow and my agent [David Manasseh]‘if I’m not leaving, I’ll sign my new contract’.

"I went in with my dog on Tuesday morning, signed the deal, and played later that day.

"We all agreed on the clause and if any team hit that, it’s a win-win because it means I’ve had an unbelievable season and Villa got £100million."

    TIMO TO OLD TRAFFORD?

Timo Werner has emerged as a shock transfer target for Manchester United.

According to German outlet SportBild, incoming boss Ralf Rangnick has pencilled in his countryman as a 'candidate' to join the club.

Rangnick signed Werner for RB Leipzig in 2016 and banged in the goals under his stewardship - netting 95 times in 159 games to be exact.

The Germany international however has not brought that form with him to Stamford Bridge.

But Rangnick could reportedly make a move for the striker in a bid to get him back firing.

    ‘HE’D INSULT ME’

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has admitted Manchester United rival Gary Neville was psychologically ‘always on top’ of him.

The Frenchman admitted to The Times: “My record against them is catastrophic and I know it.

    “My friend Gary Neville.

“Psychologically, he was always on top of me. He would talk to me all the time, he’d insult me all the time.

“It was in English, so I didn’t understand anything, but I knew they weren’t nice words.

“He was always talking to me, always barging me, always looking for me. He knew how to unsettle me.

“And unfortunately, he won. I had run-ins with him, with Wayne Rooney. All the time.”

    FESTIVE FRED

Manchester United midfielder Fred has admitted it was hard to adapt to the hectic Premier League festive period.

The Brazilian joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, meaning he no longer had a three-month winter break.

On the festive schedule, Fred said: "It was difficult at first, as we used to have holidays at the end of the year and I could spend Christmas with my family in Brazil, which was really important.

"My first season here was quite difficult. My family came over and I managed to spend Christmas with them, though there was no holiday.

"But I think that’s part of football, for those of us who aim for the top. I’m already at a great club and part of a great team, so I’m not bothered if that means I have to spend Christmas here in the cold."

The 57-year-old is in demand following his Euro 2020 triumph with Italy in the summer.

Ralf Rangnick has agreed to take temporary charge of the club until the end of the season before moving into an advisory role.

And while the former Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig manager could get the job full-time if he impresses in the rest of the current campaign, Man Utd's plan remains to appoint a long-term successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer.

    RON POINT

Cristiano Ronaldo still boasts the most points in Ballon d'Or history - despite Lionel Messi winning the coveted award twice more.

Five-time winner Ronaldo, who last won the award in 2017, has amassed 3,781 points from nominations of the award.

That is over 200 points more than rival Messi, who has picked up 3,574 points.

Despite scoring 36 goals for Juventus last season, while already finding the back of the net ten times for Manchester United this term, Ronaldo finished just sixth in the 30-man shortlist for the 2021 award.

It is the first time in 11 years that the striker has finished outside of the top three, as he picked up just 178 points, compared to Messi's 613.
